Underwhelmed by the Royal Bride

My thoughts are this... as someone who as a little girl watched in awe as Princess Diana (as she will always be to me) wed Prince Charles in a gown fit for a queen, so ..stunning that it started a new trend of gowns.. to me, this meant I had high expectations of what Kate Middleton would choose for her wedding to the future King of England.

At first sight, my immediate reaction was obvious, inspiration behind her gown was that of Grace Kelly's fabulous wedding gown. But Kate's, (Duchess of Cambridge as she is now known) was a much more simple and understated version of it. The lace used was no where near the beauty of the one on Grace Kelly's gown. Kate's neck was bare? No cross, strand of pearls, nothing.. and it needed it, considering her earrings were tiny and her tiara was understated. Her veil was too short, it should have been the length of, or longer than her train. Her bouquet was forgettable as well. I love lily of the valley, but this looked like it was on the verge of wilting. It just wasn't a bouquet fit for a royal bride.

Nope, all in all I was... underwhelmed. William was a dashing prince, but she has a role now as a modern day future queen, and I really felt fashion wise, she didn't live up to it. An example, (in my opinion) of a modern day royal bride, who did a perfect job with her bridal style, is Sophie Rhys-Jones. She wed prince Edward (Charles brother) in 1999.

Yes it's been awhile, a LONG while. My slow season or off season, has turned out to be non stop action. Personal parties I threw for my parents 40th anniversary, and then my dad's 70th birthday, and my (30 something!) birthday!

From there I jumped into planning a photo shoot for Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, and all I can say holy floral bouquets! I mean cutting edge, cream off the crop, even Grace texted me completely amazed that when she asked for "fashion-forward", that's exactly what my shoot delivered. You'll see it between the next 2 issues of Wedding Style. Shout out to M. Colon for shooting some great images that day.

I'm fast away at work now developing some ideas for break through, never been done ideas for photo shoots... Oh man, I cant wait to make this a reality because I know its going to start a trend, just like with the bridal shower!

Will be back to show off a taste of the party for my parents!

I made this amazing photographer find again, but this time its not wedding related. Marco Di Lauro's work made my heart stop. The most astounding photojournalist I've ever seen. Covering places of conflict like Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, Israel, India, Kosavo, Egypt, Lebanon, Kenya, Uganda... and then turn around and shoot someone as glamorous as Angelina Jolie. No wonder this guy works with Getty Images. I didn't bother pasting any of his images here, because a visit to his website is a must. There's no way you wont be inspired by what you see on his website, so please share your thoughts..

Remember this image? It won the title of Stellar Image of the Year. The photographer? Samuel Lippke, one young photographer whose work is admired by magazine editors and brides alike.. His talent takes him coast to coast, and as far away as Thailand to shoot an exotic wedding. Samuel Lippke Studios is one of the hottest names in Southern California right now, and if there's a photographer to learn something from, it's him. Check out my interview with him below..

About the winning image:

Samuel - I shot this with a Canon 5D Mark II. 24-105mm Lens and I believe a 5.6 F-stop. I knew that I wanted some motion blur, as we crossed the street the bride just happened to look down the road and I panned with her to capture her whole look. I made it B&W because I wanted it to be about what was in focus (the bride) and not about the background which was just a boring parking garage. Exactly how I had planned! I was thinking how dark it was getting and how I wanted to take advantage of the magic hour without using my flash. So I felt rushed, but comfortable at the same time.

I love the real & gritty sense of life in general. Wedding's can be very pure and clean feeling, but when you truly document the whole event, you can't be scared to get a few real life gritty images. In this case I tried to push the fashion and beauty even though its in some rough surroundings.

Secret to my Success: Hard work and an open mind. You have to enjoy what you do too, accept your role and run with it. Set goals and reach them one step at a time.

I'm late, I'm late to a very important place! I know, here and finally now! The judging for the "Stellar Image of the Year" was amazing, and took up a tremendous amount of time to finalize.. thus my lateness in blogging folks. - Stellar Image post is coming very soon -

Ok, so I've been getting request, after request to see where it is I'm working away, and dreaming up the next big thing. I was thrilled to have my good friend Annette Biggers, of TripleCord Photography take pictures of my place..

Perhaps one of the key shots of a wedding that a magazine looks to use in a wedding feature is the ceremony exit. It happens in a flash, and getting that perfect shot is not easy. Steve Hoffmann makes this task look like a piece of cake here. This shot has perfect composition, it has such an easy feeling, so natural.. Kudos Mr. Hoffmann.

Choosing the RIGHT advertisement

I believe this is a decision of great importance, it is a symbol of you, and your brand.

Let's look at one of the most legendary ads as an example. I remember spending a day years and years ago with famed photographer Mike Colon reviewing images from weddings, engagements, etc in search of the perfect ad shot... yes he did advertise once upon a time!

The moment I saw this image I started screaming at Mike and tugging at his arm.. "this is it, this is it!! you HAVE to use it for your ad!!" I laugh when I think of that moment, or seeing Mike describe the moment on one of his DVD's... But happy and proud when see how that ad made a difference, after a while, where ever you even glanced at the shot, you knew that symbol, that brand.

It is a smart photographer, like Kevin Swan, who knows when to make the most of an ideal situation. When you are working with a photogenic bride, (big plus if she's wearing a designer gown) the possibilities are endless with the material that is produced from that occasion. I advise my clients, if such an opportunity presents itself, its totally worth it to you, to go above and beyond what you originally intended to devote it.. as far as time, assistance, money...

These are inspiration boards I found on the Dessy website, a great little tool they have utilizing Pantone colors to create a collage of inspiring ideas to create a style for a wedding.

You know, photographers may want to pick up this idea too. Brides are always looking to magazines for photo inspiration too, the images they want their photographer to recreate at their wedding. So let's use this idea as a challenge to all you photographers out there... create an inspiration board of your images that you think represent the type of shots today's bride will want for her wedding.

I recently had a photographer ask me... How did your clients benefit from you? How did they grow in the years working with you? Very good questions, and I'd like to blog a couple answers to that from two of the most well known and well noted photographers I've been blessed to work with.

LaCour Photography, Atlanta Georgia

As LaCour grew rapidly and began photographing upwards of 50 weddings per year, we decided it was time for some soul searching and intensive brand maintenance. We knew we couldn't sustain a 50-wedding-per-year workload and we hoped to be more selective about which wedding commissions we accepted. But in order to limit LaCour to 20 or less weddings per year, we had to expand our client base beyond our hometown of Atlanta, Ga. While Atlanta could bring us a handful of premium priced events, we needed more than a few to be a successful and profitable studio.

We decided it was time to add a publicist to our team. We wanted to partner with someone who was well-connected with media outlets, tenacious enough to pursue editors and unflappable in the face of deadline pressure. This is a post I should have done awhile ago. How, where, and with who I got started long ago. The wedding industry was introduced to me by my mother. I was helping her with her small boutique style gift business. When I became interested in mixing my new found love of publicity with photography, I went to approach the best, the landmark Barber Photography to let me try to generate press for his already well known business.

I had no expectations really, honestly, he should have kicked me out the door! Who was I at the time? I had no experience, no reputation, no recommendations, nothing under my belt really specifically in the wedding photography field. Keep in mind 10 to 12 years ago, there was no such thing as a wedding publicist per say, I was coming to this hot shot photographers door with this idea and how it might work for him.

He knew about my mothers business, and decided to give me a chance to prove myself. I ended up handling publicity for 6 years for him, and learned more about photography and how to appreciate it as an art form from Jon Barber than any other photographer I have worked with, and Ive worked with my share of fabulous shooters. If I didn't get my start with him, I wouldn't be where I am today. Thanks Jon.

This is an image by Barber Photography that dates way back to my days with him, and its still on the front of his website! Why? It's timeless, and evokes such feeling from a bride of any age! Hey if the image works, don't mess with it... yes it does..

The culture of wedding magazines

I feel the need to address the topic of wedding magazines. The disappearance of 3 national wedding magazines (Elegant Bride, InStyle Weddings, Modern Bride) illustrates the effects of the declining economy on the publishing industry. As a result, the wave of online media has become attractive to the industry and to people in general as more cost efficient, accessible, user friendly, etc.. This development should not be interpreted, however, as the death of wedding magazines. Times are tough for sure but you will see the strong survive, and at some point there will be a new crop of publications, and some older ones will try to reinvent themselves.

Bridal magazines are part of our wedding culture. It is a past time for brides to collect magazines and big, glossy magazine sheets and run off to appointments to plan their weddings. This is something the computer just cant provide as well. It's part of the wedding planning experience, nicely illustrated in this photo from the movie Bride Wars. I read about this little mishap over the use of a photo of Sarah Palin in Newsweek magazine which illustrates a fundamental point of mine called submission etiquette, and reason for use of a publicist. Read the article below by dailyfinance.com

Palin photographer breached contract with sale to Newsweek

What on earth was Sarah Palin thinking when she posed in a pair of teeny-tiny gym shorts for a photograph that ended up on the cover of Newsweek -- a cover she has called "sexist"? Perhaps she was thinking that her image would only appear in the magazine she was posing for, Runner's World, and nowhere else, at least not for months and months. If so, she had good reason -- since, as DailyFinance has learned, the photographer who shot the picture violated his contract by reselling them to Newsweek.That photographer, Brian Adams, could not immediately be reached, and his agent, Kelly Price, declined to comment, saying, "I keep all of my clients' business private." But a spokeswoman for Runner's World confirms that Adams's contract contained a clause stipulating that his photos of Palin would be under embargo for a period of one year following publication -- meaning until August 2010. "Runner's World did not provide Newsweek with its cover image," the spokeswoman said. "It was provided to Newsweek by the photographer's stock agency, without Runner's World's knowledge or permission." The spokeswoman declined to say whether Runner's World intends to respond to Adams's breach of contract with legal action.
But while Newsweek's use of the photo violated the embargo, it's not clear to what extent Adams is at fault. A source with knowledge of the situation says multiple outlets, including Time, approached Runner's World after the photos first appeared on its website in July to inquire about obtaining the reuse rights. Those who inquired were forwarded to Adams. Editors at the magazine were aware of negotiations to resell the pictures, and were primarily concerned to see that Runner's World received prominent credit, says the source. In the event, Newsweek credited Runner's World right on its cover. Another source says there is some disagreement over whether the exclusivity clause in Adams's contract is meant to cover all magazines or only titles that compete with Runner's World. Meanwhile, a post on Adams's blog seems to suggest he didn't know about the resale to Newsweek until after Price concluded it.

That leaves the questions of whether anyone at Newsweek knew that Adams was not contractually free to sell the photo, and whether the promised embargo was a factor in Palin's decision to pose for Runner's World. Spokespersons for Palin and Newsweek have not yet responded to inquiries from DailyFinance. Update: A Newsweek spokesman says, "We purchased the photo from an agency and were not aware of any issues with it."

CONFESSIONS OF A BRIDE

When a bride has something to say, after all is said and the "I do's" are done, it's important to us (the wedding industry community and future brides) to hear her out. After all, what she has to say is sound advice and the best feedback one could ask for.

"A nightmare, I never thought professionals could be so unprofessional" a bride from Aliso Viejo, California describes her experience dealing with the Video/Photo service she had hired for her wedding. This bride wants to set the record straight. She had a wedding of 400 guests, and hired a coordinator for the day-of-the-wedding only. As a result, she felt overloaded with all the planning and prep work involved. She relied on advice and recommendations from family, friends, and previous brides. “Our wedding was so big and costly, my husband and I ended up having to do a lot of the work ourselves.” she says.

"I hired a video service in San Diego that hooked me up with a photographer as a package deal. Because our photographer was through the video service, I was constantly calling the videographer to confirm our photography arrangements. Three weeks before our wedding, the video person informed us he was switching us to a different photographer claiming an over- booking mix-up. Interestingly, we discovered he was pulling the same excuse with my sister, who was also planning an event. The mistake I made was not getting the name of the original photographer into the contract. I thought his verbal promise was reliable. The video service tried to push a lesser quality photographer to do our wedding, claiming our contract did not promise a specific photographer.”

At that point, the bride and her fiance drove to San Diego to confront the videographer threatening to pull out of the contract even if it meant losing the deposit. The meeting made the videographer understand their seriousness as they began discussing other options. In the end, the video person bent over backwards by arranging a good photographer, one even better than the original one. I think he finally realized that unhappy clients = negative press.

Yes, the photography of a wedding held outdoors versus indoors is always more appealing. Natural lighting does wonders as all photographers knows. But it takes a true pro to know how to "work" mother nature to your camera's advantage. Tim Halberg's work blows me away, especially when I see him create magic in the midst of nature.

Once a month I will feature an inspiring image that deserves recognition. It can be something I stumble upon, or even an image that was emailed to me. However it finds it's way to me, if it evokes a special feeling, a sense of creativity... it will be deemed "Stellar Image the Month".

The very first STELLAR IMAGE, is by a photography enthusiast, not a studio or business. This beautiful image, taken by Sami R. Hermes, (no relation) is dark and offers no glimpse of the bride's face, but has a mysterious and romantic quality to it. I love the way the car headlights hit her dress, and the street lamp shine in the background, but doesn't take focus away from the bride.

Why is PR/publicity important to a business or a professional?
Let's look to one of my favorite fashionable people, Rachel Zoe, Hollywood stylist to the stars, as an excellent example to illustrate my point. Imagine what this fabulous woman accomplished with celebrities raving about her, magazines constantly wanting to feature her, the media frenzy surrounding her when she's out and about networking... these being elements of good PR that helped create her brand and reputation. Good PR and image, though, do not come about by chance or without a focused and carefully directed effort aimed at predetermined goals.

What is PR/Publicity for the wedding industry?
It is a set of carefully planned and executed actions and activities aiming at a goal, usually, to promote the professional or business and elevate their image and stature in the field. The ultimate purpose from these efforts is to increase effectiveness, success, and the business itself. A plan is developed accordingly to pursue specific goals. The plan may include publishing, networking, promotion, advertising, etc. These plans require regular and constant review, assessment, and revision to ensure they remain up-to-date and relevant. It's important to keep in mind success of the publicity plan doesnt happen over night. I tell my clients think of this as an investment in the future of your business. Look at the big picture.

Cant I do it myself, do I have to hire a publicist?
Of course you can do the work yourself. Actually, it boils down to interest and priorities. What I mean is if you have the interest in spending time doing this sort of work and the follow-up it requires to meet deadlines on a regular basis, then you should consider taking it on. Second, it has to do with priorities. Some photographers, for example, would rather spend their time and efforts focusing on photography and building or improving their business, networking, editing their work, client meetings, album design etc.. rather than spending their time and effort on the workload of publicity. Of course, skill and knowledge of the inner workings of publicity work, publications, industry contacts, etc may make a big difference in both success and willingness to devote the time and effort required for effective results.

If you decide to invest in a publicist, choose one carefully to ensure they are focused on your type of business or profession and develop a mutually satisfying working relationship with them to enhance results. Also, examine the kind of knowledge and experience they have to handle situations for you that you may not be aware of or at ease handling. Make sure they have a track record of clients (esp. one in your field) that says something about their success.

Having a publicist in your corner certainly can facilitate working to get you published while providing you with someone for independent ongoing advice and feedback on publicity planning, networking opportunities, marketing and promotion, assistance in creating and developing your brand. For example, some of my clients’ most memorable ideas developed while we were just chatting and brainstorming..

When is the right time to hire a publicist?
You have to be ready in terms of the quality of your output, the creativity and originality of your work, and your professional artistry, when attempting to launch a publicity project. Your work must reach a level of quality as judged by your peers, clients, and other independent indicators of success. At that point your work should be ready to compete for attention, recognition, and reward through publicity and publication. It is then that your work can compete effectively against the backdrop of a marketful of competition. At this point you must have a sufficient amount of quality material for your publicist to work with. And you must be flexible and receptive to work with new, different, and bold ideas from your publicist.

Remember, in the end, your publicist’s role in your business is all about working to make you bigger than life!

One of my favorite "graduates" as I like to call my previous clients, Joe Photo is the rock star of photographers. I love this image, Joe captures the split second of fuming emotion by this little girl.

I love the innocence of this shot. It shows a true photojournalistic master at work. It reminds me of flower girl images from my all time favorite wedding, Princess Diana to Prince Charles. Jennifer Lindberg's natural and care free style commanded my attention from the very first time I saw her work!
